The Unsung Superfood

More Than Just a Savory Vegetable

A lot of people are surprised to learn that there are some common ingredients they have hanging around their kitchen that have some incredible healing benefits and could be doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to keeping you healthy and disease free. Today's unsung superfood is none other than the common onion, beloved by many for its sharp, sometimes sweet, and savory flavor. Let's explore what makes this common vegetable such a powerful remedy for some very serious illnesses.

For such a common staple, onions do a lot of heavy-lifting for your health.

Onions and Diabetes

Diabetes is rising rapidly and by 2030 is expected to be the seventh leading cause of death. With this disease becoming more and more commonplace it's important to protect ourselves with as many foods as we can that actively contribute to preventing and fighting Diabetes. Research has shown that consumption of onions can play a big role in bringing high blood sugar back down to normal levels. Likely the high fiber content and rich antioxidant content are responsible for this impressive find.

Onions and Cancer

Like Diabetes, we all have known a family member, friend, or acquaintance who has had to battle with Cancer for their life. This pernicious disease has had an impact on all of our lives and the ability of onion to fight cancer is another HUGE reason to include this superfood in your diet. Research on stomach, prostate, esophageal, and colorectal cancer have shown onions to be effective on ALL of them by reducing metastasis and cancerogensis (ability of cancer cells to replicate themselves and spread). The sulfur containing compounds in onion as well as the rich flavonoid content (a form of antioxidant) are believed to be at the heart of these findings.

Onions and Infection

As if the anti-cancer and blood sugar regulatory abilities of onion weren't enough, onion is also a powerful antimicrobial and highly effective for combating infections. The juice in particular is a powerful antimicrobial agent to fight infection but we also grind or finely chop onion and use it as a poultice for its ability to draw out infections by pulling toxins through the blood, lymph, and skin.

Eat More Onions

This unsung super food does so much work when it comes to maintaining our health, I couldn't even list all the benefits. Heart health, bone density, digestive health...I could have gone on and on. The bottom line is that just because this is a common food doesn't mean it isn't also a superfood. Eat more onions!
