Onions For Infections

Onions have been known for thousands of years to be effective at treating skin infections, but it's only in the past few years that experiments have been conducted to study the efficacy of onions for this purpose. This study, for instance, found that onions were able to inhibit the growth of V. cholerae bacteria in petri dishes. Another study also found onions were effective at deterring the growth of bacteria responsible for eye infections. The same mechanism that onions use to inhibit the growth of these pathogenic bacteria is the same mechanism onions use to fight infections in your skin.

Onions for Burns

We all deal with burns on our skin at some point, but something we may not all be aware of is that onions are highly effective for treating this as well. Onions are rich in sulphur compounds as well as the phytochemical quercetin which are both powerful for treating superficial burns. Make sure you use fresh onion juice directly on the burned area and not only will this help the skin to mend, but it's also effective at dissipating the pain from the burn as well!

Onions for Acne

The high antioxidant content of onions are also highly effective for reducing the inflammation associated with acne. The high amount of sulphur in onions have also shown to increase glutathione production and this study found glutathione levels to be lower in people who were prone to skin breakouts or had damaged skin.

I hope this gave you deeper understanding of just how incredibly versatile the common onion is, not just for enjoying for their characteristic flavor, but to be used to treat so many wide-ranging ailments. Onions truly are the unsung superfood.
