The Antioxidant You Can’t Afford to Ignore
Glutathione is often called the "master antioxidant" for a good reason—it plays a very crucial role in natural detoxification, immune function, and overall health and vitality. We produce it naturally in our body, however, as we age, our natural production declines, leaving us more vulnerable to oxidative stress and disease. The good news? With the right diet and lifestyle, you can keep your levels of glutathione high, even as you age, thus making yourself less susceptible to disease, and generally more vital and youthful.
What Is It and What Does it Do?
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that our body naturally produces primarily in the liver and it is made of three primary amino acids: glutamine, cysteine, and glycine to protect against disease-causing oxidative stress and free radical damage. While it is mostly synthesized in the liver, every cell in your body produces SOME glutathione to protect against oxidative stress, especially high-energy organs such as the brain and heart. This antioxidant is crucial for keeping our immune system healthy, detoxing harmful compounds and even heavy metals, and protecting us against the ravages of age-related illness.
What Reduces Glutathione Production?
The truth is that there is no cure for aging, it is something that affects everyone, and naturally, with age, our glutathione levels naturally reduce. However, there are other factors that can also really accelerate the loss of glutathione production such as chronic stress, poor unbalanced diet full of processed foods, chronic exposure to toxins (heavy metals, environmental pollutants, alcohol), and chronic illness and infections.
How Do We Produce More?
Thankfully there are ways of encouraging the body to produce more glutathione production via two mediums: cleaning out and detoxing the liver, and supplying the body with the necessary building blocks to synthesize into glutathione. One of the most powerful natural methods we use for keeping the liver clean is with dandelion leaf tea. The leaves work better than the root and the leaves can be boiled into a tea that serves as a powerful liver cleanser. We also recommend eating a diet rich in vegetables with high sulfur content such as onions, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables. Other antioxidant rich foods such as berries and avocados work great for helping to regenerate more glutathione.
Don’t Neglect This Area of Your Health
Glutathione is known as “The Master Antioxidant” for a reason, it plays a huge part in keeping us youthful, healthy, and resistant to diseases. The high levels of glutathione we enjoy in our youth is one of the primary reasons children don’t generally get the chronic illnesses such as arthritis or Alzheimer’s that we are prone to as we age, so don’t neglect this key area of your health. With a healthier liver, and the right diet, you can mitigate the effects of the aging process and keep yourself free of disease and pain as the years roll on.
