More Than an Anti-Inflammatory

Turmeric has become very popular in the Western world over the past decade or so, but out in the east, it’s always been beloved as the yellow-orange spice that comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and is actually in the ginger family. It’s well known for its earthy, slightly bitter flavor, it’s a key ingredient in curry powders, and it’s also known for being rich in curcumin, the compound largely responsible for its now famous anti-inflammatory properties. But you already know that, right? Well, what if I told you that on top of being a powerful anti-inflammatory, turmeric and curcumin were also effective for combatting illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune disease?  There’s a lot more to this humble spice than many would have ever realized.

Turmeric and Diabetes

Turmeric has shown promise in combating diabetes due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Research suggests that turmeric can help lower blood glucose levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce complications related to diabetes, such as neuropathy and retinopathy. Turmeric also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other protective effects that help improve pancreatic β-cell function, and prevent β-cell death in animal models.

Turmeric and Autoimmune Disease

Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, may help combat autoimmune diseases by modulating the immune system and reducing inflammation, which is central to many autoimmune conditions. Curcumin's anti-inflammatory properties can downregulate inflammatory cytokines and suppress immune system overactivity, helping to mitigate diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and lupus. This is huge for autoimmune sufferers!

Turmeric and Cancer

As if all that wasn’t enough, turmeric is also effective against cancer. It works by affecting various cell processes, like growth factors and enzymes, that are involved in cancer development. Curcumin can promote cell death in cancer cells (proapoptotic) and reduce proteins that help cancer survive (antiapoptotic). This suggests it could be an effective cancer treatment, especially when combined with other therapies.

Conclusion

Turmeric and it’s vital compound curcumin are incredible for helping with so many ailments. While it’s anti-inflammatory effects are very powerful and very important, it’s incredible just how far beyond this that turmeric can go in its ability to help you be free from pain and disease. It is a food that should be  in every kitchen, make it a staple in yours.
